Jeff Wall – A Sudden Gust of Wind

Jeff Wall – A Sudden Gust of Wind

Ensemble is pleased to present an immersive new installation reproducing the iconic artwork A Sudden Gust of Wind (after Hokusai) by Canadian conceptual artist Jeff Wall. Jeff Wall’s work synthesises the essentials of photography with elements from other art forms—including painting, cinema, and literature—in a complex mode that he calls “cinematography.” His pictures range from classical reportage to elaborate constructions and montages, usually produced at the larger scale traditionally identified with painting.

Nearly a decade in the making, this collaboration between the artist and American publisher TBW Books responds to the challenge of how the scale and ambition of Wall’s work could be rendered uniquely into a new book form. The installation reproduces ninety-eight unbound lightweight sheets of paper, assembled to create a full-size four-metre version of the original artwork.

The materiality of the individual sheets blowing in the breeze connects with Wall’s conceptual photographic practice, and is available as a portfolio directly through us – Please enquire for more details.
